                 State Highways department expects to complete the road widening works taken up recently at Coimbatore, Pollachi and Udumalpet (on NH 209) in another four months. According to an official of the department, the project has been taken up by the National Highways wing of the State Highways department under the road safety segment. The works started three months ago to widen the road into a four lane one at a total cost of Rs. 22 crore. It includes works at Pollachi (Rs. 6 crore), Udumalpet (Rs. 6 crore), and Coimbatore (Rs. 10 crore). History        T he district was set up in 1918 and moved up to second grade region in 1970. It was announced as a first grade region in 1979 and further moves up to determination review district in 1984. The degree of the region is 7.41 kmsq of which 6.582 sqkm is urban and 0.828 sqkm is country.
